The Japan Ski Trips You'll Regret Not Taking
Let’s be real, you’re freaking out right about now. You know it. We know it.
It’s just that time of the season. Everyone else has locked in their travel plans and you’re still unsure, tossing between endless webpages, AI apps and social media trying to find the best places to go this winter.

We can’t decide that for you… but we can help – or at least help you realise what you may be about to miss out on.
So alas, here's the three Japow ski trips that we can 100%, unequivocally guarantee that you will regret missing out on.
Where You’ll Regret Not Going #1 - Niseko:

Why?
Deep Pow
C’mon, it’s the mecca for a reason. Niseko is well and truly the most famous of all of Japan’s winter resorts, acting as one of the main tourist hot spots over the winter season. But there's a good reason for that…
Pow. It’s why all eyes are on Japan to begin with, and when it comes to Niseko, the reason why it’s become so highly revered over the years.
And before you ask, about 10-15 metres per season – that’s the AVERAGE snowfall for Niseko.
10 - 15?! That's 50 Subway Footlong sandwiches. It’s nearly 7 Shaquille O’Neals. It’s 4 giraffes (neck included). It’s a darn lotta snow is what it is.

Endless Backcountry
Ok, so disclaimer on the above. Those stats are very much based on snowfall coverage of the Niseko United resorts. The untamed backcountry on the other hand?! You take your best guess.
It’s a powder paradise, and from Niseko, it’s almost all accessible. So if you’re looking to earn your deep turns this season, Niseko is your spot. Trust us on that, BC touring in Niseko is the essential must-try experience, and if you decide not to this season, you WILL regret it.

Four Resorts
Let’s be honest, if you decide to stay home instead of going to a ski resort this winter, you’ll regret it. Now multiple that feeling by 4.
Yep, if you turn away from a winter (or spring) trip to Niseko this year, you’re not just turning your back away on one epic resort, you’re turning away from 4.
For those of you who don’t know, Niseko United is made up of four different ski resorts; Hanazono, Grand Hirafu, Niseko Village and Annupuri. As you can imagine, across that many resorts, you’d also be missing out on some pretty once in a lifetime terrain.

Epic Events
It depends where and who you ask, but we’re going to make the claim right here and right now – Niseko hosts some of Japan’s best events.
There, we said it. Rail Jams, Film Festivals, massive open air events (including last year’s crazy Rhythm anniversary party), it’s the hub of it all.
Especially around the springtime months like March, when the skies are bluer, vibes are higher and apres options are endless.
Where You’ll Regret Not Going #2 - Hakuba:

Why?
Too Much Terrain
Ok, the sub-header was slightly click-baity. Is there really such a thing as ‘too much terrain?’
We don’t think so. But down in Hakuba, it does get pretty close, offering up 10 different ski resorts all covered under a single lift pass.
If you’re reading that and thinking, ‘wait, I can live in regret OR I can tick off multiple bucket list Japow resorts under one pass,’ you’re exactly right. Favourites like Hakuba 47, Happo-One, Tsugaike, Cortina – all the resorts you ever wanted, would you capture them, or just let them slip?

Easier Access
If the multi-hour flight to Japan seems enough in itself, Hakuba offers easy access as its location on Honshu means there’s no domestic flights required to get there.
Is this really a deciding factor that’ll make you regret not booking that trip? No. No one ever has regretted not booking a trip because of the ease of commuting to their final destination once they arrived.
BUT, and this is a big one – we know that there’s a lot of you who write off booking in your holidays because it seems like ‘too much effort’. So if that’s you, yes – you will regret taking the easy (lazy) option.

Epic Winters
Tell you what makes you regret something? When the activity in question turns into a waaayyyyy crazier experience than initially anticipated.
Ever turned down an invite to meet your friends for pizza, only to see the group chat blowing up because they just met Shaun White at Papa Johns?
Kind of the same thing as Hakuba over the last few seasons, with their snowfall genuinely rivalling the rest of Japan as the ultimate pow destination.
Could anyone have foreseen that? Maybe meteorologists, but for the bulk of us, no. It was just the luck of the winter, the skies opened up and the pow fell – then didn’t stop.
So if you’re someone who is going to fall into deep regret when the snowfall turns out to be epic, this is your chance.

Awesome Nightlife
We’re making a few mega claims in this blog, so why stop now?
Out of all the ski resorts in Japan, Hakuba has the best nightlife options. There, we said it.
Speakesies and games bars in Hirafu, karaoke in Echoland, on-snow venues like Hakuba Apres – and of course, daily happy hour at Rhythm and Beans.
Trust us, if you’re someone who gets FOMO seeing that you missed out on a standard night out at home, there’s about 100 venues in Hakuba that’ll give you those same feelings of regret.

Best Parks
Grew up doing seasons in Aus or North America and find now that you’re equally as excited about the park as you are for pow? Hakuba’s park scene will have you regretting not making the trip over.
Especially the mega park at Hakuba 47 which rivals world famous set-ups like Park City.
Where You’ll Regret Not Going #3 - Furano:

Why?
It's The Indie Option
Find that you’re someone who won’t even wait for their slice of pizza to cool down before eating it? We get it. Sometimes, things just aren’t as cool once they become cool.
So for all of those who are hipsters at heart who would rather hit your friends with a “oh, you went to Niseko. We hit up Furano, but you may not have heard of it,’ now’s the time. Get in before the masses figure out it’s really where the best pow’s at.

Quieter, Much Quieter
FOMO comes in many shapes and forms. Normally, it’s associated with businesses.
‘Dude, it was pumping’
‘Literally everyone was there’
‘You were the only one who didn’t show up’... you get the picture.
Normally, it’s bred from a feeling that you missed out while everyone else had fun. But if you really want to know what will trigger the biggest FOMO?
‘We were riding Furano for a week straight and barely even had to line up.’
Yep, that’ll do it. No one likes waiting in lift lines – not even lifties. So when you’re tossing up potentially regrettable moves in not booking your holiday, not visiting Furano and enjoying it before the bubble bursts will 100% be one of them.
And when we say that the bubble will burst, we mean it. Our take? You have about 2-3 seasons to rip up central Hokkaido before Furano is equally as much of a tourist hotspot as Niseko or Furano.

Japan's Best Food
Ok, this is something we harp on about a lot but we truly believe it, Furano’s food scene is close to the best in Japan.
Do you mean the best of all the Japanese ski resorts? No.
Furano’s food scene rivals the best of the best, offering up some of the best restaurants, freshest ingredients and unforgettable meals you’ll have in Japan.

Guided BC Experiences
Even for a BC enthusiast, Furano’s mountain ranges can be pretty difficult for newcomers. So no, BC touring isn’t quite the experience you’ll regret doing… a guided BC experience is.
Why? Because they know the terrain and conditions better than anyone out there. And nothing creeps in regret like riding a mountain range in average conditions to find out that others had a perfect bluebird day in the backcountry just one peak over from you.
Lean into the local guides, because at the end of the day, they’re locals before they are guides. So if you want to know the best pow stashes in the region, tap in – their knowledge is so much better than you’ll ever get from a blog or AI generated answer.
