Age: “I’m 30 years old.”
Rides: “I snowboard on a Ride ‘Helix’.”
Position: “Guest Services Supervisor at Rhythm Hakuba.”
Favourite thing to do off the slopes:
“My favourite thing to do off the slopes is explore different towns on the hunt for the best ramen or head into the city for a Second Street and Kappa Sushi trip.”
How would you describe your season?
“I would say this season has surpassed all expectations. Busier than expected, slower start with the snow but then it came back strong with some of the greatest powder days that I have ever had, which left staff and guests all frothing.”
What was your job before working for Rhythm?
“I worked at Falls Creek in Australia as the Guest Services Senior Supervisor, which is a similar role but I also got to get to help the guests out and around on the mountain too.”
Is this your first season working for Rhythm Japan?
“This is my second year working for Rhythm. My first was the 2019/2020 winter season just as COVID was rolling in.”
Why did you choose to go to Hakuba over Niseko or Furano?
“I have had some friends that worked here in the past that couldn’t speak highly enough about the environment and culture here.”
What have you loved about working for Rhythm Japan in the 2023/24 season?
“I have loved the fact that even after growing so much in between my seasons here, the team is still so focused on making sure that the staff are having a good time and are looked after, which really shines through to the calibre of service that we offer our guests.”
How would you compare the 2023/24 season to your past experience doing seasons around the world?
“There’s something that hits differently in Japan. The powder here is unmatched, which adds another level of excitement to everyone’s day. There’s so much variety of terrain here, with the 10 different resorts in the Hakuba valley and a few other resorts and areas only a stone’s throw away. The team here is phenomenal as well, they very quickly become your family, compared to seasons I have done elsewhere in Australia and Canada.”
Would you recommend Rhythm to people thinking about doing a snow season in Japan?
“I couldn’t recommend Rhythm any higher. Genuinely the most hard working team all with the same goals to stoke the customers out and also get out on the slopes themselves.”
What’s a quote or song that will remind you of the 2023/24 season?
“Quote: ‘Another long black Sam?’ – I heard this on the daily from the coffee team.”
“A song that has recently sound tracked my season has been ‘Back To Me,’ which is a recent Kanye West number.”

His stories of the breathtaking landscapes and unparalleled powder piqued my interest, and when the chance arose for me to experience it firsthand, I eagerly jumped at the opportunity. The allure of Niseko’s renowned ski resorts, coupled with the prospect of creating my own unforgettable memories in such a picturesque setting made the decision to visit an easy one.”

Why did you decide to go to Hakuba?

“Absolutely, I would recommend Rhythm Japan! I’ve always felt valued as an employee. There is an inherent understanding within the company that we all love the snow and are here to ride, and they do their best to give everyone as much time as possible to get up there and shred. Not to mention the pay is darn good for Japan!”
Favourite song or quote from the season?

Why did you decide to come to Niseko?
“I chose to come to Niseko because it’s arguably the most accessible place in the world to get a lot of powder days. Particularly with El Niño, I knew I wanted to be in Hokkaido. I was also limiting myself to Japan as it was my last opportunity to get the working holiday visa before the age cutoff.”
What have you loved about working for Rhythm in the 2023/24 season?
“I’ve loved the good vibes everyone brings. People are always up for riding together, showing you their favourite spots, encouraging each other to send it, and at work we all help each other out. Most are here for the same reason – the Japow– so everyone has at least one thing in common.”

“I was last here 6 years ago in late Feb/early March for 10 days. I was staying out in Moiwa, which was a lot smaller but a great place to learn riding in powder and through trees. Niseko is definitely heavy on the gaijin compared to most other places in Japan, but I’ve never really struggled to communicate or get help, especially with the tech available these days.”
