Top Reasons To Shred Niseko In Spring

We all know Niseko is off the charts when it comes to peak season snow. Sub-zero conditions, super-dry powder, waist-deep turns, what’s not to love? Well…aside from the prices and the crowds of course–nobody loves that. Which is why you might want to consider spring for your ski trip this season.

We know, we know…Niseko in spring? It’s not prime powder time–but before you close the window, hear us out. By the end of this short article, you might find yourself sold on the idea of tearing up Niseko during spring time for your future ski trips!

1. Great Weather

Riding back-to-back powder days feels great under-foot for the initiated, but it comes with no shortage of learning curves: constant snowy conditions mean flat visibility, where grey snow merges with grey sky and you can't tell if you're about to hit a hole or a wall without the correct lenses. Riding in the trees provides an option for better visibility but is only for confident riders – and if you happen to be a snowboarder caught in a deep spot, you’re going to spend a good 30 minutes sweating buckets.

Sunny skies are a rare sight in Niseko during peak season, and although we all love the thrill of skiing in bottomless powder, it's equally fantastic to carve the slopes under blue skies, enjoying dazzling views of the surrounding region. And who doesn’t love shredding with a view?

If getting that iconic Mt Yotei shot for the 'gram is on your bucket list, or if you're a less seasoned rider, then travelling during spring will be right up your alley: plenty of cloud-free days are on the menu along with pristine white slopes in abundance!

Spring is the ideal season for backcountry touring and guiding. It offers a chance to experience the tranquillity of the region further afield from the resort boundaries and really appreciate Niseko's nature. The warmer weather also welcomes local wildlife poking around for a forage.

If you love the outdoors we recommend booking a Guided Tour with Rhythm this spring and keeping your eyes peeled for wild Tanuki, Kitsune, and elusive Yuki Usagi (Snow Rabbit).

Most importantly, you'll enjoy plenty of untouched turns while you're at it!

3. Shorter Queues. Everywhere!

Enjoying peak season in Niseko comes with a caveat: there's a whole lotta people here for the same reason! Whether you want those early-bird fresh turns after an all-time overnight dump of snow, a seat at the most delicious ramen joint in town, or the last piece of spicy chicken at the convenience store - you'd better be prepared for some stiff competition.

Or, chill out during spring! Enjoy quick laps of your favourite runs, dine-in at a Michelin Star restaurant every day of the week, or load your pockets with all the convenience store chicken you can carry and feast like a king within the comfort of your accommodation!

4. Family Friendly Conditions

Ultimate family tour

Warm weather, clear skies, lack of crowds, and familiar snow conditions provide a great environment for families to enjoy Niseko in spring.

1. Warmer weather means kids are happier out on the snow for longer
2. Clear weather means great family photos without a snowflake blotting out a loved-ones smile
3. Uncrowded slopes means less risk of collisions or getting lost for the younger riders
4. Deep powder is challenging for inexperienced riders: spring snow and groomers provide excellent riding conditions
5. Lean season discounts mean a family trip to one of the world's most desirable ski destinations doesn't have to be so expensive
6. Forgot to book a family restaurant a week ago? No drama! Walk-ins are back on the menu during spring!

5. Deals, Discounts, Dollars Saved!

Christmas Gifts trips

We've saved the best for last; everyone loves a ski holiday but they rarely come and go without leaving a conspicuous dent on the wallet. You can reduce that dent to a barely-discernible dimple if you're a savvy traveller who is happy to forego guaranteed powder (and the associated crowds!), in favour of sunny days on the snow and a whole lot of extra Yen in your pocket saved from the shoulder season discounts on accommodations, rentals, lessons, and more!

The most sought-after accommodations with easy chairlift access, stunning Mt Yotei Views, and attractive amenities such as onsen, spa, restaurants, grocer, etc are more readily available during spring, and usually at discounted rates.

For spring 2024, Rhythm Japan is also offering 20% off lessons, guiding, and touring. Pair this offer with our usual 10% rental pre-booking discount and you'll have wads of cash to throw at the things in life that really matter (more convenience store chicken, obviously.) A great opportunity to drop by our retail stores in Niseko and grab some gear, perhaps!
